Black Rockfish Bonanza: A Stellar Day Near Santa Cruz Harbor

Sometimes the fish gods smile down on you, and today was definitely one of those days! The black rockfish were absolutely fired up and ready to bite, making for an unforgettable fishing adventure right in our backyard waters.

Close to Home, Big Results

Rather than making the long run to deeper offshore waters, we decided to stay relatively close to Santa Cruz Harbor and work the productive 40-foot depths that lie just outside the bay. This decision proved to be exactly right, as the fish were stacked up and eager to feed in these familiar waters.

Micro Jigs: The Perfect Presentation

The key to today’s success was our choice of lures. We rigged up with 3/8th ounce micro jigs, a presentation that proved absolutely irresistible to the black rockfish. These smaller profile jigs perfectly matched what the fish were looking for, and once we dialed in the technique, the action was non-stop.

The black rockfish responded aggressively to the micro jigs, providing steady hookups throughout the day. There’s something incredibly satisfying about finding the right combination of location, depth, and lure presentation that unlocks consistent fishing success.

Lingcod Bonus: Quality Over Quantity

While the black rockfish stole the show, we also connected with some excellent lingcod during our time on the water. We landed five lingcod total, with three of them reaching keeper size – a solid success rate that any angler would be thrilled with.

The standout lingcod of the day was a beautiful fish that pushed nearly 10 pounds, providing an excellent fight and representing the quality of lingcod available in these waters. These keeper-sized lingcod will make for some fantastic table fare alongside our rockfish.

Cabezon Adds to the Mix

Adding even more variety to our catch was one nice cabezon that fell for our micro jig presentation. Cabezon are always a welcome addition to any fishing trip, known for their excellent eating qualities and the unique challenge they present to anglers.

Halibut Hopes for Later in the Season

We dedicated a couple hours to targeting halibut, managing to land one fish that unfortunately came up short of the size limit. While this particular halibut had to go back, it’s encouraging to see them starting to show up in the area.

The halibut fishing should really pick up steam as we move into the prime summer months of June, July, and August. These warmer months typically bring the best halibut action to our local waters, so there’s plenty to look forward to in the coming season.

Another Santa Cruz Success Story

As we headed back to Santa Cruz Harbor with our mixed bag of quality fish, it was clear that staying close to home had been the right call. Days like these remind us that some of the best fishing can be found right in our own backyard waters.

The combination of cooperative black rockfish, quality lingcod, and the promise of improving halibut fishing makes for an exciting outlook for the rest of the season!
