Halibut and Rockfish, Great Fishing For The Kids
This weekend we ran two separate charter trips heading out from Santa Cruz Harbor. The first trip started with halibut fishing, but the 3 children 12 years and younger were getting bored so we quickly switched gears to rockfish. The rockfishing was good with us landing 18 rockfish and 1 lingcod. We used small swimbaits and live squid to entice the rockfish. The kids had a great time and are excited to come back again.
Live squid is the ticket for halibut fishing
The second trip wanted halibut and right away we hooked up with a large halibut that we lost after a short fight.
After a short while we landed a very large 15-pound halibut. This was a good keeper that made everyone happy. The fish fought hard and the group of guys were excited to see a fish this big. Shortly after we landed an even bigger halibut, tipping the scales at 20lb. We landed one more halibut at 10lb before heading in.
Learning About Timing
This week we’ve noticed that halibut seem to bite better earlier in the day. The early morning trips have been great, while afternoon and evening fishing has been a litter slower. Every week can be different, but right now the early bite seems to be the pattern.
Looking Ahead to Summer
The halibut fishing is only going to get better as we move into summer. As the water warms up around Santa Cruz, the halibut become more active and the bite improves. We’re seeing great fishing, and the best is yet to come.
Summer halibut fishing in Santa Cruz is always exciting, with bigger fish and more consistent action. If today’s fishing is any sign, this summer should be great for halibut anglers.
